Money matters when it comes to online study

Money We’ve spoken before about the incredible savings that are possible with online study, as opposed to on-campus study. And we know that cost is an incredibly important part of deciding how, when, and with whom to study.

Here are some of our tips when planning your budget for studying:

1. Know the costs

As we mentioned in our previous blog post, many online courses charge extra for exams, assessment centers or resits, and you may also have to pay out extra for course materials and textbooks. A lot of institutions also charge international students an inflated price.

However, at the University of Essex Online, all of your course materials are included in our learning platform, and there are no added fees when it comes to exam time. We also charge the same tuition fees for both UK and international students.

Want to know more about our fees?

2. Look into student loans

This one is a no-brainer if you’re eligible. Government-backed student loans are an incredibly cost-effective way to pay for your higher education, and all of our courses are designated for undergraduate or postgraduate student loans in England. These loans can pay up to the full tuition fee for a course.

Residents of Northern Ireland may be eligible for an undergraduate student loan.

For more information about eligibility, repayments and application process, check out our student loans page.

3. Talk to your employer

If the content of the course you are hoping to study is applicable to your job role, why not approach them to see if they are willing to cover the costs of your course, or subsidize it at least. Many employers will see this as evidence of your commitment to your field of work and will be willing to discuss payment options.

You can also take a look at your HR policies to see if there is any provision to cover personal or professional development fees.

4. Consider spreading your costs

If you’re self-funding, you may not be able to pay the full tuition fee for the course you choose in one lump sum. Instead, look for courses that offer the ability to spread your costs throughout the duration of your study. At the University of Essex Online, we offer exactly this – a simple monthly payment plan that allows you to pay as you study.

5. Look for discounts

Some online course providers offer discounts on some of their courses. For example, we offer two different discounts:

  • if you pay the full course fee annually or up-front, you will receive a 10% full payment discount off the cost of your tuition
  • if you are a graduate of the University of Essex or University of Essex Online, you will receive a 10% alumni discount on full postgraduate courses

Discounts like these can really affect the price you need to pay for studying, so it’s always worth looking into the options that are available.

6. Find a scholarship

Scholarships are another incredibly effective way to reduce the cost of your studies. Awarded based on merit, you will normally need to write a statement in support of your scholarship application or provide other evidence.

At the University of Essex Online, international students can apply for a 10% part-scholarship towards the cost of their fees, and our MBA applicants may be eligible for our Executive Scholarship of £6,000 towards the fees for studying an MBA with us.

Find out more about our discounts and scholarships.

7. Look at external funding

If you’ve found the course you want to study, it might also be worth looking around at career services and funding bodies relevant to your current role or your future industry.

For example, members of the armed forces may be eligible to receive funding for ELCAS towards any their study (all of our courses are eligible for this funding). Those planning on studying healthy subjects who are based in the UK may be able to find the funding they can apply for through the Health Course website.

Try doing a search for “undergraduate degree criminology funding” or a similar term depending on what course you are looking at.

8. Consider all your options

Working out how to pay for your studies is just as important as figuring out which course to study! It’s important to do your own research, work out how much you can reasonably pay up-front or each month, and find a course that you can afford.

Luckily, you’re not alone – our knowledgeable Admissions Advisers are happy to discuss your options with you and help you work out what the best decision for you is. You can speak to them through email, phone or LiveChat.

Digital Marketing Facts for 2020 and Beyond

What do you get when 600 marketing leaders across all industries from North American to the U.K. weigh in on how they spend marketing dollars? A whole lot of evidence suggesting that the future of digital marketing is both bright and a little baffling. Let’s take a look at Gartner’s latest 2018-2019 CMO Survey results and break down key findings to predict what doors they may unlock in the years to come.

7 Digital Marketing Trends

1. We are on the brink of “significant” uncertainty.

Between growing cybersecurity concerns, tightening compliance standards, turbulent foreign relations and the threat of another economic recession, business leaders face more risk today than ever before. These challenges are intensified by the fact that collectively, we are all pioneers of a new Wild West (the digital economy) that is as volatile as it is full of promise.

What this means…

Proceed with caution. Big risk is still met with big reward, but the stakes are growing higher. Moving forward, there is little space for assumptions. Every decision you make must be educated, calculated and backed by data.

2. Despite potentially troubling times ahead, digital marketing budgets are growing.

Fifty-seven percent of CEOs and senior business executives plan to increase their overall marketing budgets, with 21 percent of funds dedicated to advertising. More specifically, two-thirds of advertising dollars are going toward online ads versus offline.

What this means…

Digital advertising works. Here’s why: The pressure for marketing to prove ROI hasn’t let up. In fact, it’s only going to get worse. Digital advertising is easy to track. Value is easy to prove. And many activities can be handled in-house, which makes this marketing activity an attractive option for brand awareness and lead generation strategies. However, marketers must not forget history. As ad space becomes saturated, the competition will intensify and could diminish ROI.

3. Marketers and executives see value from opposite ends of the spectrum — and it’s a problem.

Marketing leaders reported that their primary focus is awareness. As such, they still use awareness-based metrics to prove marketing value. On the flip side, business executives care most about ROI and view awareness benchmarks as “vanity metrics” that bear no impact on marketing value.

Digital Marketing

What this means…

The ages-old divide still prevails. Marketers know the metrics that matter most to business executives, but they still aren’t leading their pitches with the data that CEOs and CFOs want. As long as this divide exists, we can expect budgetary growth to remain small and incremental at best.

Check out this free guide for advice on how to change your tune and better connect with your executive team: How to Secure a Marketing Budget Even When Sales Are Strong.

4. Innovation is a priority for CMOs, but their ambitions far exceed their capabilities

Sixteen percent of CMO budgets are going toward the invention of new processes and activities. Sixty-three percent of CMOs expect this percentage to grow. Their intentions are noble, but their ability to successfully execute marketing innovations is still very low.

What this means…

Marketing leaders understand the importance of finding new, better ways to stand out and make meaningful connections. Likewise, CEOs are going all-in on innovative solutions to create new business opportunities. But true innovation means going beyond what you know is possible. It’s about exploring the impossible and proving that it’s not. Marketers may have finally gotten buy-in for the tools they need to innovate, but they still haven’t achieved the skill-level needed to push boundaries.

5. Martech is the single largest area of investment.

In 2017, we saw a dramatic 15 percent drop in martech (marketing technology) funding that cashed in around 22 percent of marketing budgets. This year, spending shot up to 29 percent, accounting for nearly one-third of total funds.

What this means…

Given that martech is a rapidly expanding industry with a daunting number of solutions, choosing right is a significant challenge for CMOs. The increase in martech spending is largely due to a growing dependency on outside services and IT support. In other words, organizations are prioritizing digital transformation, but the verdict is still out on how investments will positively or negatively affect marketing teams (and budgets) down the road.

6. Marketers are looking at customer experience through a narrow lense.

Eighteen percent of marketing budgets are allocated to customer experience (CX) initiatives. However, Gartner’s study indicated that CMOs might be focusing too much effort on mid-funnel activities and not enough on attracting new customers and retaining them. Furthermore, marketers still aren’t measuring CX metrics to improve their outcomes.

What this means…

Marketers are somewhat oblivious to the quality of the customer experience they are delivering. Without a history of data to confirm or deny their assumptions, they can’t effectively design a pathway for potential unknown customers or existing customers. Starting immediately, marketing leaders need to track CX metrics, such as:

  • Net Customer Value Growth (NCVG): The economic value of new customers versus the value of customers lost during a set period of time.
    • NCVG = [(volume and value) new customers] – [(volume and value) customers lost]
  • Net Promoter Score (NPS): A survey that asks customers to rate how likely they are to recommend your brand to a friend or colleague (on a scale of 1-10).
  • Referrals: The amount of business that directly resulted from existing customer referrals.

7. Personalization efforts are on the rise, but the slope is slippery.

A little more than 14% of marketing budgets are currently spent on personalization efforts. This makes perfect sense considering the importance of CX. But, like marketing innovation and martech, Gartner cautions CMOs to tread lightly.

What this means…

The increased spending on personalization is evidence of its challenging nature. Given the low level of innovation capabilities and the growing concerns surrounding trust and privacy, personalization is a fine line that can only be navigated with extensive customer data and the skills and integrations to leverage that data.

A common thread weaves a compelling final prediction…

Globally, organizations across all industries are outpaced by changes in the world’s most influential drivers:

  1. Technology
  2. The marketplace
  3. Consumer behavior

Luxury Villas – Research and Plan Before You Invest

Are you planning big as part of your investment options? Then it is the right time to put your money in buying a luxury villa. A vacation villa can be a sensible option and you can choose anyplace you would like to go for. With the market ups and downs, it is very important to conduct a market study before you step into anything that you are not much aware about. On the other hand, if you are an expert you will surely have a good idea about the hype and the falls of every single place on earth either through the internet or collections.

Market research is of great significance no matter which country you are selecting. Always choose a tourist destination having visitors almost round the year and this will help in gaining more income. You can rent out on those days when you are holidaying that your investment turns into hard cash in no time. In most of the holiday destinations like Provence, Cyprus and other colder parts of the Europe large families always prefer to rent a villa rather than a hotel for their own privacy and also for more fresh air.

The rules laid forth different from one country to another in buying a property. Therefore you can talk with a well-known lawyer or a real estate market expert who can give you a better idea before you finalize one. The next thing you have to check before you find a villa interesting is the easy access for transportation and also the availability of grocery. This is something that people look out while rental a property and therefore applies to a plus point for yours too.

Find a location that is much distant from your place with calm and peaceful atmosphere so that you can breathe fresh air when you are out for a walk. If you can find a fully set up house with furnishings and all the amenities completed, it will be a win-win situation for you. This will cut down your expenses of investing more into it and for a fixed amount you get a completed house to relax and also to add up to your income.

With the rising holiday rentals and booming real estate market there would not be a better option than buying a villa. It gives you both the comfort of your own home in your favorite place and a financial aid by giving for holiday rentals when you are not in the place to pay back your mortgage.

Best Strategies And Approaches For Trading On Currencies

Gamblers belong in casinos, not on Forex. Before you begin trading, make sure to study market trends and have done some stock analysis. Read books on the subject and study online as well. A basic course in Forex would be worth the investment if you want to get the most popular Forex Robots out of your buying and selling experience.

You should pay attention to the larger time frames above the one-hour chart. Technology can even allow you to track Forex down to 15-minute intervals. The thing is that fluctuations occur all the time and its sometimes-random luck what happens. You do not need stress in your life, stay with long cycles.

Are you interested in becoming a currency trader? Now is the best time to do it! You may be unsure of how to begin and what is involved, but this article can help shed some light on answers to these questions and more. This article will provide you with some excellent tips for beginning foreign exchange trading in the right way.

Adjust your position each time you open up a new trade, based on the charts you’re studying. Traders often open in the same position and spend more than they should or not a sufficient amount. Vary your position depending on the trades above you if you want to be profitable in the market.

Every Forex robots trader should begin by playing with a demo account, but the really smart ones hang onto their demo accounts even after entering the real markets. Demos continue to be useful to traders by giving them a testing lab for new strategies and tactics. Trying out new plans through a demo account is the only risk-free way to assess their viability.

As a Forex trader, you should remember that both up-market and also down-market patterns will always be there; however, one will always dominate the other. A market that is trending upwards makes it easy to sell signals. You should try to select trades based on trends.

Stay away from trades involving unpopular currency pairs. When you stick to trading the most popular currency pairs which have high liquidity, you will always have the ability to quickly buy and sell positions in the market. If you are trading with a rare currency pair, you may not be able to find a buyer when you wish to sell.

The Canadian dollar is one of the safest currencies to start with on the Forex Robots market. It is often difficult to follow the news of another country. This can make Forex hard sometimes. The U.S. and Canadian dollars usually follow similar trends, making them both good investment choices. This makes investment in the Canadian Dollar a safe bet. dollar, and that is usually a safe investment.

Adjust your position each time you open up a new trade, based on the charts you’re studying. Opening with the same size position leads some Forex traders to be under- or over committed with their money. The positions you pick have to reflect present market activity if you want them to be successful ones.

If you trade in Forex markets, don’t be afraid to use your account tools in your personal life. For example, if you are planning an overseas vacation, use your analytical tools to plot the value of that currency. In this way, you could see dates when it would be better or worse to take that vacation in terms of exchange rate.

Consider the advice of other successful traders, but put your own instincts first. While you should listen to outside opinions and give them due emphasis, ultimately it is you that is responsible for making your investment decisions.

As shown in the beginning of this article, there is a huge opportunity for success for Forex traders. While learning, you will need all the reliable information that you can get to avoid any problems. Use the advice in this article to keep you out of trouble, while you are Learning Forex Trading.

After you’ve learned about stop losses in Forex, you will understand the importance of protective stops. Even still, you will need to know how to effectively use them. One great tip to remember is to never place a protective stop on an obvious round number. Stops on long positions should only be placed below round numbers.

If managed Forex accounts are your preferred choice, make sure you exercise caution by investigating the various brokers before you decide on a company. A good rule of thumb is that you should choose a broker who consistently beats the market. Also, they should have a five-year track record or better.

When you’re new to Forex, one of the first things you’ll want to decide is the time frame you’d like to trade in. In order to move your trades as quickly as possible, utilize the hourly and quarter hour chart as a way to exit from your position. A real Forex sniper, dedicated to lightning-fast trades, would employ charts set for intervals of five or ten minutes.

Do not place protective stops on round numbers. When placing protective stops on long positions, place your protective stop below round numbers and for short

positions set the protective stop above round numbers. This strategy decreases risk and increases the possibility of high profits in all your Forex trades.

What Drives Your Long Term Business Success? – Study Macro Trends to Find Out

Strategists analyze macro trends looking for what will drive growth in their business.

A marco trend has a long life, a result of many forces in your community that you cannot manipulate. Like a river, you go with the current or exhaust yourself fighting it. Usually, as a strategic planning team formulates a strategy, they lump trends into areas of analysis in their external environment – their market and community – to identify opportunities and threats. These are:

  • Demographics – population groups, life spans, family composition, disposable incomes
  • Economics – capital, business processes, productivity, work patterns, management
  • Environment – raw resources, ecosystems, transportation channels, habitat
  • Government – world events, politics, laws, public and economic policy, regulation
  • Society – lifestyles, values, religion, leisure, culture, education, public-health
  • Technology – innovations, scientific discoveries, economies of scale

A trend may fall under several of these areas, but as a strategic planning facilitator, I resist the temptation to put it under two or more, since you can overstate its importance.   I want the business strategists to methodically think through how the market will change their business.

A “driver” is a trend in the community, as it builds momentum, that will trigger an opportunity or threaten for your business. For example, in 2009 the recession has spurred Walmart’s sales as consumers search for bargains.   The sub-prime and derivatives mess has devastated home builders.

We can estimate demographic trends well into the future while politics seems to evolve along the election cycle. Economics – the business cycle our focus – is data rich but prone to short term surprises. Technology trends are identified from industry associations as the best firms innovate and create the standards so their products will have an advantage in the market.

The question is do have an in depth understanding of what “drives” your business?

How to Make Your Copywriting Stick Out Like a Fart in Study Hall

If you want to know a secret way of using all the scams and con artists in your market to your advantage when writing your ads and sales letters, then this article will show you how.

Here’s the story:

A couple hours from where I live is a rather unusual house. I won’t say it’s “haunted.” (I don’t believe in ghosts.) But methinks there’s some bad mojo going on there. And it’s given my wife and me an extremely… uneasy… vibe whenever we’ve driven past it. (It’s one of those places where you can almost feel the hairs on your arms bristle when you get near it.)

But you know what? We’ve got freaky places like that online, too.

I’m talking about copywriting so blatantly manipulative and dishonest (usually targeted at newbies) one can get a bad vibe from it without knowing anything about the product, the website owner or even the market.

Just reading for a few seconds is all it takes.

It’s truly freaky how easy it is for some people to lie, con, cheat and steal from unsuspecting (often gullible) people like that. As if it’s “the thing to do” now. But guess what?

These “haunted” sales letters open up a HUGE opportunity, too — especially for anyone who’s willing to put away the fancy tricks and tips and go the opposite way.

For example…

We’re pretty much at the point where just having an ad that doesn’t scream “sales job!” ALONE flings you past the rest of the bleating herd of black hat marketers trying to trick people into buying.

Using “candor” (being candid about your product — especially its drawbacks) is extremely profitable, too.

Frankly, just treating your prospects like thinking people (instead of cattle) can make you stand out like a fart in study hall.

These things aren’t always considered “sexy” these days. But these proven principles have lasted the test of time, in every market imaginable. And there’s no reason they won’t work for you, too.

Analysis Plans – The Underdog of Market Research

Often when I recommend that a research team prepare a formal analysis plan the first response I hear is, "Why? The analysis is not due for weeks and I have too many other things to do."

An analysis plan is not extra work; it's work that makes all the other project tasks flow efficiently. It will help you produce on-time project deliverables. Typically, you develop an analysis plan in parallel with your research instrument (RI) or questionnaire. Like the questionnaire the analysis plan is tied back to the goals and objectives of the study. In addition to the obvious purpose of an analysis plan, producing a plan serves to improve the RI and manage project scope, these benefits alone will pay you back for the time you devote to creating it.

The RI is referred to in an Analysis Plan (AP) and while there are no hard or fast rules and no one right way to structure an AP we can offer some guidelines. The approach described briefly here is as good as any and better than most for quantitative studies.

The first step in this process will be familiar to those of you who have read AtHeath publications from the Market Research Resource Center (MRRC). Specifically, research has the greatest chance of success when the objectives are clearly stated and that is where we begin. Use these five (5) straightforward steps.

1. State the key study objectives clearly at the beginning of the analysis plan (AP) and refer to them through the process.

2. Describe the major comparisons for the analysis (eg, major cross tabulations for the study such as: Customers versus Non-customers, Companies by size, Customers that are Satisfied, Neutral, or Dissatisfied).

3. State how each question is used to answer a specific objective of the study either on its own or in combination with other data points. Think through how you expect to present the results from each question. What statistics, if any, will you use in the analysis? Identify the independent and dependent variables.

4. Write a clear justification for including the information from the question in the study and perform a section by section "So what" litmus test.

5. When the analysis plan is finished, go back and make sure each key study objective has been addressed.

These five steps are the basic approach to the AP template (see it is straightforward). The key is to focus on objectives and think critically about how to execute on the primary goal of the study.

Next, let's dive a little deeper inside the Analysis Plan. Two of the five steps of an Analysis Plan (ie, steps three and four) are reproduced for each section of the questionnaire. Combined, these two steps provide the question-by-question detail of your analysis plan. First, each section of the questionnaire is described in a brief outline format. Next, the analysis requirements are described for all questions in the section. Finally, a 'justification' is written for the questions in this specific section of the questionnaire are needed. This is the "So what" litmus test. The example below may help to demonstrate how steps three and four are implemented.

Example Analysis Plan Steps 3 and 4
Section Q of the Questionnaire:

Topic – Accessibility of information and mechanisms to access information (eg, data):
a. Website features and functions customer depend on and / or like best
b. Perceptions and preferences for push versus pull tactics for receiving information from host firm

Q10, Q11, and Q12 – All focus on the website features and functions customers and prospects value most and the vendors that do the best job of implementing these features and functions. Conduct a feature / function prioritization analysis – multiple response analysis. To optimize the data, recode open-ended questions (Q12) and conduct analysis to classify the best websites.

Q13-16 – For these questions explore the general frequency of website use and specifically responsive 'use websites to make purchases. These are primarily descriptive analyzes with comparison by the major cross tab groups already outlined. In addition, we are likely to use these data in a segmentation analysis, which we will describe later.

Q20-40 – Capture data on "touch" issues eg, pushing information to clients, how frequently and in what ways. Basic descriptive analysis [possible segmentation variable] and cross tabs with significance testing will be applied.

Justification – The first part of this section provides us with competitive information, but more importantly points us to specific implementations that are considered "best in class" by clients and prospects – a very powerful tool for prioritizing and implementing features on our current website and any redesign work we decide to undertake.

The second part gives us general frequency of website use and purchasing, which is nice to know info, but may not be as actionable as other data. It tells us the relative importance of the website across our customers (by type weaknesses) and if we build-in ecommerce functionality, how much it might be used. However, I doubt we would decide to provide or not provide ecommerce functionality based on the study results (optional information).

The touch information is highly actionable and can help guide our efforts and inform decisions on the level of investment to make in these activities. End Section Q.

As you can see from the example a thoughtful description of the analysis work and the value of the results, along with the justification provides a roadmap. Time well spent

The Market Approaches a Top – What Can Be Expected?

Previously, I discussed reasons our economy would go through a major downturn.[1] My study of major bear markets[2] indicates that after a market top and drop, such as the one we have experienced since January 26, there is a second top coming within -2.6% and +2.9% of the first. This marks the beginning of a major bear market. Having arrived at the traditional topping range, what can we reasonably expect moving forward?

What follows is a summary of market behavior for every major bear market since 1929 that, like ours, was preceded by a correction. There are six of them starting in 1929, 1937, 1946, 1969, 2000, and 2007. S&P 500 data is used for the 1968, 2000, and 2007 bear markets. Dow Jones closing data[3] was used for all bear markets before that.

The largest drops for this market were (trading days from the peak given in parentheses) 13.5%(12), 11.7%(13), 9.9%(17), 6.8%(20), and 6.3%(9). The 30-day average change was -1.07%. By trading day 10 the % loss was 15.1%. By day 30 it was 31.0%.

The largest drops for this market were 5.0%(18), 4.5%(15), 4.3%(28), 4.1%(24), and 3.1%(20). The 30-day average change was -0.68%. By trading day 10 the % loss was 6.0%. By day 30 it was 19.1%.

The largest drops for this market were 2.5%(15), 1.2%(13), 1.0%(30), 0.95%(14), and 0.77%(8). The 30-day average change was -0.13%. By trading day 10 the % loss was 0.9%. By day 30 it was 3.9%.

The largest drops for this market were 1.4%(19), 0.92%(3), 0.90%(17), 0.89%(4), and 0.77%(18). The 30-day average change was -0.29%. By trading day 10 the % loss was 2.7%. By day 30 it was 8.4%.

The largest drops for this market were 2.6%(28), 1.9%(24), 1.6%(27), 1.5%(19), and 1.4%(10). The 30-day average change was -0.33%. By trading day 10 the % loss was 5.0%. By day 30 it was 9.6%.

The largest drops for this market were 2.9%(10), 2.6%(15), 2.5%(6), 1.8%(27), and 1.6%(29). The 30-day average change was -0.24%. By trading day 10 the % loss was 2.6%. By day 30 it was 7.3%.

All the bear markets declined gradually for the first week. In fact, it was rare to find a substantial drop during that first week. Except for 1969, none of the largest percentage drops took place during the first week and those were only 0.92% and 0.89%. Markets did begin to diverge during the second week with the 1929, 1937, and 2000 markets dropping 15.1%, 6.0%, and 5.0%, respectively, after 10 trading days.

Once the top was reached, there was no turning back. Instead, most markets had a steady decline. The only exception was the exceedingly volatile 1929 market, which declined 35% by the 13th day recovered 19% and subsequently resumed its decline. This is an important point for our market since the S&P 500 had an intraday high of 2801.90 March 13. This placed it within 2.5% of the January 26, 2018 high, just within the window for the second peak topping range. That would have placed that potential second peak historically early for a major bear market with a correction preamble. The fact 24 trading days later we are still waffling back and forth and in a recent uptrend is in stark contrast to previous major bear market profiles and argues against that being the second peak.

Note that, except for the 1929 market, which by that time was recovering, none of the markets had reached bear territory 30 trading days after the market peak. Technically, the 1937 market had dipped into bear territory days before it but was only sitting 19.1% below the peak by day 30. All the other markets were only approaching correction level territory.

Given that summary, it is likely that we will also experience a gradual decline with little damage the first week. In fact, with large loss days paling in comparison to those we saw in early January, it may well lull investors into a sense of complacency. Having gone through a long correction already, there will likely be little concern a month and a half later if the 30th trading day arrives with losses still in the single digits. That would be a mistake as the bear relentlessly creeps up on us.
